Insurance Questions: Can I cover someone who is not my dependant?
Fore example, if you have elderly parents and you would like to cover them with your insurance, could you do so without making them your dependent?
Answer: The short answer is no. If someone is not your dependent your employer isn’t going to let you use your insurance to cover them. You must first take responsibility for them through declaring them as dependents. If you think about this it makes sense, your parents claimed responsibility for you when you were young because you could not do it for yourself. Now, the tables are turned and it is time for you to take the responsibility for them. This might be one of the better ways to deal with a situation like this because finding their own policy at an older age will be hard to do if they are looking for a good deal.
